Hi there! 👋 I’m Ida, and this is tiny driver, a newsletter about research, pedagogy, culture and their intersections. Thank you for being here. Reply anytime, I love hearing from you.
Here we are, at the end of 2020.
My first newsletter went out in mid-July, when I was still in Providence, RI getting ready to move to Chicago. Since then, I've started a new job, prepped for 2 courses, written 1 book proposal, written 5 freelance articles, released 1 digital zine, and written 24 of these newsletters.
I usually write tiny driver on Sunday mornings, when the sun is shining pleasantly through my apartment windows. And over these months, tiny driver has been the single most consistent thing in my life and one of the best ways I've been able to write through this time.
A lot of that has to do with you, the readers of this newsletter. Over the months, I've seen my newsletter list grow from my close friends to folks who I've not yet met. It started with texts from these close friends, telling me to keep going. And I end this year with emails & tweets from readers around the country who are responding to my words and telling me that they enjoy getting my newsletter in their inbox on Monday.
Thank you, truly. I write this as much for you all as I do for me. And I am honored that you are taking the time to read this little corner of the internet.
I'll be taking next week off in order to recharge a bit, but I look forward to coming back on Monday, January 4 with the energy of the new year upon us. 🥳
Item(s) of note.
In the Bookshop:
Currently Reading: Tomboyland: Essays by Melissa Faliveno
On Deck: Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
🌟 I only have one item of note on the docket, and that's to please consider taking the tiny driver end-of-the-year survey! 🌟
Writing tiny driver has given me so much joy over the past six months, and I've been thinking more and more about how I want to learn more about how readers of tiny driver interact with the newsletter, what's going well and what I could be doing better. By filling out the survey, you'd be helping me make decisions about the future of the newsletter and potential projects that I think would benefit the whole community.
Answering the mandatory questions should not take more than 3 minutes. There are a few optional free-flow questions at the bottom where you can answer as much or as little as you want, and even completely skip if you're in a rush.
Again, here's the link if you'd like to help shape the future of tiny driver!
📬 And, as a thank you, I'd love to send you a hand-written note! Info on that is at the top of the survey! 📬
A pup-date.
This is how I will be spending my winter break, in between the loves of my life and exclusively wearing my favorite sweatpants:
As always, thanks so much for reading through, and I'll see you in the next one!
Warmly,
Ida
